How to Style: Entry/Console Table

The entry table—a beautiful piece to have in your home but ever so tricky to style! I have received so many questions on how to style a console table or entry table. How do you choose the right accessories and decor without making it feel cluttered? It’s easy to buy things just because they’re cute but when it comes to finding a place for them, you get frustrated. Styling console tables can take a little time, but follow these simple tips to have your table looking wonderful in no time.

1. Think Simple & Intentional. One of the biggest misconceptions about styling a console table is that you have to fill every square inch of it with decor or that it's a catch all for all your junk. This leads to a very cluttered, overwhelming look. A bowl for keys and mail can be both beautiful & functional.

2. Start with a Focal Point. Create a focal point or anchor above your console table.  Oversized art, a mirror or a gallery wall are three of my favorite ways to create a focal point.

3. Vary the Heights & Shapes of Objects. Layering objects of varying heights and shapes are key to styling to keep the area from feeling stale.  The size of your console table will determine the exact formula to achieve this look.  For smaller tables, 2 to 3 different height sections will work great.  For larger tables, put 2 symmetrical items at the ends of the table to anchor it.  These items don't have to match.  I love a large lamp on one end with a vase with larger greenery on the other. Then add other layers of heights in between those items.  Books, bowls, pedestals are great for adding these layers of different heights.

4. Under The Table.  Many people always focus on the top of the table, but with many tables there is an opportunity to add layers & texture under the table.  If the bottom of the table is open add small poufs, baskets with blankets.  If there are shelves add larger pieces to finish it off--oversized vases & baskets are my favorite ways to style these areas.

5.  A Collected Look.  My favorite way to add interest to any space is to make it feel collected.  I do that by using new & vintage items.  This creates so much interest to any space & it truly is my favorite look.

6. Add a Candle. Whether you’re just relaxing at home or entertaining company, you’ll want something to make your house smell good and the candle can serve as pretty decor.

Lastly, take your time styling! You'll probably arrange & rearrange many times before it feels right. Sometimes you need to walk away and take a break from decorating so you can come back with fresh eyes. You don’t have to get it right the first time and I promise you’ll constantly be changing things up!

Need to update your console table or maybe you’ve found a place to add one? Here are some designs I’ve put together for you, so you can easily style your own table.
