Design Essentials: Rugs

If there’s one thing I believe every room needs, it’s a rug. Rugs ground your space—literally—but they also add warmth, texture, and personality in a way few other pieces can. Whether you’re building from scratch or refreshing a space that just feels a little tired, a rug can be the thing that pulls it all together and makes it feel like home.

Honestly, a room without a rug just feels off—kind of like getting dressed and forgetting your pants. Or like trying to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without the bread. You can, but why would you want to?

I get asked all the time about rug quality and how much you should spend. And here’s my honest answer: there’s a place for just about every type of rug. You can absolutely find something beautiful at a budget-friendly price. For a season of life filled with sticky fingers, spilled juice, and muddy paws, a less expensive rug might be exactly what you need. They’re easy to roll out, live with, and replace without guilt when life leaves its mark.

Just know that most budget rugs aren’t made to stand the test of time—and that’s okay. They’re not investments; they’re solutions for the season you’re in. On the flip side, if you’re ready for something that will last (and look better with age), vintage rugs are my favorite. These rugs are often over a hundred years old and have already proven their durability. They’re forgiving, full of character, and the wear only makes them more beautiful. I have a few trusted sources I return to again and again—Traction Mercantile Co., Violet Vintage Rugs, and Brass and Anchor Collective—and Etsy is full of gems if you’re willing to do a little digging.

Of course, style and material are only part of the puzzle. One of the biggest mistakes I see when it comes to rugs is choosing a size that’s too small. Even the prettiest rug won’t do your room any favors if it’s floating like a postage stamp in the middle of the floor. When in doubt, go bigger. In the living room, aim for a rug that at least anchors the front legs of your furniture. In the dining room, it should be large enough that your chairs stay on it—even when they’re pulled out. And in the bedroom, think about a rug that extends beyond the sides and foot of the bed.

I’ve rounded up some of my favorite new rugs if you’re in the market for something beautiful, well-priced, and practical. These are styles I’ve used in my own home or saved for future projects—options that blend function and charm without feeling too precious.

At the end of the day, rugs are one of those pieces that can transform a space without overcomplicating it. They can warm up a blank room, define an open layout, and add just enough texture to make a space feel finished. So if your room feels like something’s missing, try starting from the ground up. It might just be the rug.
