Design Essentials: Greenery & Florals
If you’ve been around here long, you already know I believe that every space—no matter the style, size, or function—needs a little touch of life. And by “life,” I mean greenery.
Real or faux. Large or small. Plants and stems add color, texture, movement, and that cozy, lived-in feeling we’re all after.
I’ll be the first to admit—I don’t have a green thumb. I’m team faux all the way. But if you’re keeping your fiddle leaf fig alive and thriving, please know I’m cheering you on from afar.
For the rest of us? Faux works beautifully. Here are a few ways I like to incorporate greenery into the rooms I design:
Large Faux Trees
These are my go-to for filling awkward corners, softening hard edges, or making a big visual impact. I especially love them placed in front of a floor mirror—such a simple way to double the greenery effect.
If your tree doesn’t come pre-potted, no problem. Just pop it into a basket or crock, stuff the base with newspaper or plastic bags, and top it off with moss. Instant upgrade.
Faux Stems & Arrangements
I have a love/hate relationship with stems. Love the look, hate the price tag. That said, if you’re buying high-quality ones (Afloral is a favorite), they truly are worth the investment. They look so real, they last forever, and they elevate a space instantly.I like to use them in fuller arrangements—on the mantel, the kitchen island, a coffee table, or anywhere that needs a little softness. Just remember: full arrangements take more stems than you think, so plan for a few extras.
Small Potted Greenery
Don’t overlook the power of a sweet little plant on a shelf or side table. Target, HomeGoods, and even Amazon have some really pretty, affordable options. These work great for bookshelves, nightstands, or layered into a styled tray.
No matter where you add them, greenery makes a room feel more alive. It’s that finishing touch that ties everything together and makes your home feel warm and welcoming—without saying a word. So if a room in your home is feeling a little flat, try adding some green. It just might be the missing piece.
